Introduction to Commercial Auto Insurance
Commercial vehicle or auto insurance, is insurance for vehicles used in business. Although some insurance providers allow for business use on personal insurance policies, there are types of risks and vehicles sizes that can only be placed on a commercial auto insurance policy.
Liability Coverage
Much like regular auto insurance, liability insurance is arguably the most important part in commercial auto insurance. Commercial Auto Insurance liability limits are usually for a combined single limit or C.S.L. rather than split limits for financial protection from bodily injury and property damage to others caused by you in an accident with your commercial vehicle.
Uninsured Motorist coverage, is available for commercial auto policies and is often also in a Combined Single Limit form. Providing protection for bodily injury and property damage from uninsured & underinsured drivers. Uninsured Motorist Coverage is optional in commercial auto policies.
Commercial Auto policies have an optional Medical Payments coverage providing a small amount of immediate coverage for medical payments regardless of fault.
Physical Damage Coverage
Physical Damage coverage for your commercial auto insurance offers protection for the value of your commercial vehicle in case it is damaged from a collision or other-than-collision. Many insurance carriers will offer stated value for your vehicle or truck.
California Law
Depending on the type of risk and vehicle, the California DMV may require a certain minimum limit for insurance, before you are allowed to drive you commercial vehicle on public roads and highways. Those commercial vehicles requiring a MCP or Motor Carrier Permit filing, typically require a liability of C.S.L. of $300,000 to $1,000,000.
